Te Deum WindowAbout The "Te Deum" WindowUnveiled by Robert H. Gummer Esq. And The "Te Deum" WindowTHE TRACERY - at the topThis contains the Gate of Heaven (26), with cherubin; and the River of Life: "He showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the Throne of God and of the Lamb"; and the Tree: "On either side of the river was there the tree of life." On the two sides are the Lamb (27), and the Dove (28). THE MAIN LIGHT - through to the foot."Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ," He takes, of course, the central position (1) ---with the glory suggested in the form of rays surrounding His person. He is "clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt with a golden girdle." "Heaven and Earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory." Heaven is represented by the cherubin and seraphin (2), their praises ascending in the "Holy, Holy, Holy," Earth is represented by the farm worker, and mother, and children (3), together with the little creatures at the base (20-25), all combining in "We praise Thee, O God." THE SUPPORTING LIGHTS - on either side"The goodly fellowship of the prophets" -- four kneeling figures. Isaiah (4), Jeremiah (5), Moses (6), Elias (7)---the last two introduced specially because of their association with Him on the Transfiguration Mount. "The glorious company of the apostles" -- S.Andrew (8), S.Peter (9), S.John (10), S.James (11). "The Holy Church throughout all the World doth acknowledge Thee" represented by S.Augustine (13), missionary to Britain; and S.Celia (15), patroness of church music. THE SHIELDS - at the base."When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb" -- suggested by the Crib (16). "When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death" -- indicated by the empty Cross (17). "Thou didst open the Kingdom to all believers" -- displayed in the Open Door (18). "Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the Glory of the Father" -- pictured in the Throne of Splendour (19). TE DEUM LAUDAMUS!The beautiful Window was executed by Mr. Donald B. Taunton, |
